Domestic garden scheme: (cost over £10,000)

The Judges’ Comments:
This reconstruction of the upper half of a sloping garden was essentially to provide a level spacious patio and lawn as an external extension to the house.
This included a formal water feature at the patio level spilling over into a less formal pond at the lower level. The paving was particularly impressive as was the soft work integration into the existing garden.
The lifting and replanting of existing well established shrubs including a Magnolia Grandiflora had been well managed and executed.
A most pleasing scheme.

The Judges’ Comments:
A slope of more than 1 in 3, rising 6m from the house in only 17m meant that the contractor faced a significant challenge. Substantial retaining works overcame large tree stumps, bedrock and very limited access.
The design created a larger patio with lighting and a water feature.
Good materials and detailing of hardworks and timber along with low maintenance shrubs has created a family garden of useable space where there was none before. The result is a vast improvement and the realisation of space for a delighted customer.

The Judges’ Comments:
This garden developed after the new house was built. Inheriting a building site, Mick Callahan overcame the site’s drainage problems and installed a pumping station to raise water to the main drain. Many existing mature trees were retained and the Andy Sturgeon design tied the garden and house together well.
Linden Landsapes have used quality materials and a very high level of craftsmanship to create the coffee table look. The excellent contemporary planting was established in the hottest and driest summer thanks to the daily diligence of the contractor.
The client is delighted and has nothing but praise for Linden Landscapes.

The Judges’ Comments:
An impressive Grade II listed Georgian property with an impressive landscape to suit. This formal design provides and authentic garden in keeping with the style of the property. Long formal planted borders edged with lavender flank a triple feature pergola making clever use of existing levels on the site, eliminating the need for retaining walls.
The planting is traditional in style and adds to the natural look of the timber pergola and sandstone paving used throughout the garden. Much use has been made of views within the garden framed by soft planting on the pergolas. A swimming pool was incorporated into the design by the client, excavated out and paved round by the landscape contractor. Traditional herbaceous planting flanks formal stone steps from the pool to a seating and eating area for a summer evening retreat.

The Judges’ Comments:
A ‘picture postcard’ re-creation, quite literally! An old picture from Hampton Court inspired the client to re-create an interesting rill and pool water feature making full use of the skills of Linden Landscapes’ staff. Classical geometric layout dominates in the hard landscape, which has been cut and laid to perfection.
The informal parkland views beyond are reminiscent of grand historic estates. Carefully selected brick paviours have been skilfully laid along the length of a narrow courtyard to the rear of the old Orangery. Flawless craftsmanship!

The Judges’ Comments:
The Andy Sturgeon design for the garden of this lovely traditional home has been faultlessly executed by the contractor who had to work with a number of different materials to achieve the desired effect. Soft, subtle grasses enhance an area of decking on which all fixings have been beautifully aligned.
The intricately paved flooring of the large and impressive glasshouse cum conservatory has been exquisitely laid by the contractor and resin-bound aggregate has been used for pathways through the garden. All materials had to be off-loaded in a local car park before being transferred to the property, which provided the contractor with an additional challenge. This is a lovely scheme and the owners are delighted.
